Anatomical and Roentgenological studies on the Osteophytes and Abnormalities of the Vertebral Column of the Korean

Abstract
In an atempt to provide the information on the vertebral osteophytes in Korean race relating them with age, profession and degree of osteophytes 707cases of apparently healthy labor(20-30 years of age) and randomly selected 112 cases of both sex aged 20 to 70 were observed rcentgenologically and a series of 57 dried, vertebral skeleton and 15 series of spines from dissected specimens, were examined macroscopically.
1. Vertebral osteophytes were first found at 20 years of age in both sex and in male at 40 to 50 and in female at 50 to 60 osteophytes were found ice 100% of skeleton. Load bearing labors on the back osteophytes of the spines earlier in age than those of the ordinary person who had not engaged, in such heavy load work.
2. The distribution of the osteophytes in the different regions of the spine were somewhat different according to age. The early osteophytes were foundd in the younger age as the following order in number of affected spine in the lumbar, thoracic, cervical, and sacral vertebrae and later osteophytes, were prominent especially at the thoracolumbar junction of the spine in male workers and at the upper cervical vertebra in the female.
3. Anterior osteophytes were foulad in many instancess at the lumbar thoracic, cervical and sacral vertebrae although posterior osteophytes were rare but still present at the cervical vertebrae.
4. Besides of osteophytes described above abnormal findings in the vertebrate at the various levels of the spinal column were spina bifida occulta, senieosteoporosis, sacralization, scoliosis, and narrowing of the intervertebral disks. Osteoarthritis and degenerating changes of the intervertebral disks in all cases were associated with the osteophytes. Osteophytes and abnormalities-of the vertebrae in heavy load workers were found to be more frequent and more severe than those of ordinary person and those of European and North American reported by others. This may be attributable to the working conditions and methods of labor in Korea where traditional workers carry heavy load of the back agreeing with the notion that osteophytes tend to appear more where pressure is greater.
